Book Club Roles

1. Reader
• Everyone is a Reader at all times!
• Your role is to read the book and participate in discussions.
• Be respectful of others’ opinions and beliefs.
2. Discussion Leader
• Being a Discussion Leader does not make you the “expert” on a book. Don’t feel like you have to know everything about it to lead our talk.
• Before the meeting, the Discussion Leader will compile some background information on the book, such as why it is considered a classic, notes on the author, historical significance, etc. This will be shared at the beginning of the meeting to educate us all on the book.
• Come to the meeting prepared with some questions about the book to get the talk rolling. These can be questions of your own design or one you find from other resources.
• Your role is to act as mediator. While some debates can be fun, we do not want conversations to get out of hand. If you feel the talk veering off course, it is your duty to get us back on track.
• You will not be asked to be a Discussion Leader and the Host during the same month.
3. Host
• Open your place to the group to hold the monthly meeting.
• Provide snacks and drinks (not a meal!) for the group.
• You will not be asked to be the Host and a Discussion Leader during the same month.
4. Movie Discussion Leader
• This is a voluntary position and will never be assigned.
• During a regular monthly meeting, if the book we are discussing has also been made into a movie, someone can volunteer to host a Movie Discussion.
• It is the responsibility of the Movie Discussion Leader to rent the movie and schedule a time to view the movie at their place with interested club members within a week after our monthly meeting.
• A Movie Discussion will consist of watching the film, then talking about differences/similarities to the book.
